In the year 2008, a storm came into China without any portent warning. I have never seen such a heavy snow before, and certainly it left me an unforgettable memory.

Not having seen snow for years, I was so delighted that it snowed heavily not long after I returned home. I like snow, I like that it’s white and pure. However, I had no idea at that time that because of the white and pure snow, a lot of my countrymen suffered a disaster.

The snow lasted several days. The roads in front of our houses were frozen; many stalactites hung under the eaves; the wind whipped the house and brought the cold air; the vegetables in the garden froze into hard sticks. Almost all kinds of transports were stopped according to the news report. What I saw was that hundreds or even thousands of cars or buses were blocked on the highway. People were trapped on their way home. They did not know whether they could get to their destinations on time, and they had not prepared for that. Consequently, they had no food to eat, no water to drink. What’s worse, they were eager to get home to spend Spring Festival with their relatives and friends rather than stay on the road, trembling in the chilly wind.

One day, I went to the county center with my father. We met a man who asked his way to the center. He told us that he was trapped on the highway, and he needed to buy milk powder for his two-year-old child in the car. He has been trapped on the road for days so that the milk powder for the child was not enough. We told him the way, but it seemed that it was difficult for him to take a taxi or bus downtown under such circumstance. Considering this, I asked my father whether we could give him the milk powder, which my little two-year-old niece drank. My father agreed without any hesitation. Then we turned back and brought him to our home, and gave him the milk powder. He was happy that he needn’t need to worry about his son’s food any more. He looked satisfied and excitedly thanked us. My father and I felt glad, too, for we had helped a man in need. I also know that there were many people who gave water and food to people trapped on the highway.

I didn’t experience what the trapped people experienced, neither felt what they felt. However, I saw people help others in trouble. And many soldiers helped to shove the snow on the roads so that the cars and buses could pass safely. It was advocated that many people donate food, clothes, and money to the people in disaster areas. I got to know that there are more kind-hearted people than cold-blooded men in our life. As long as people love and help each other, the world will be a harmonious one just like a big family.
